EMPRESAS SANTOS
Established in 1991 in Monterrey, and based on a long family tradition in the food industry, the group’s major activity is centered on sugar crushing and refining. From an initial purchase of sugar mills from the Mexican government, the group has expanded to between 2.5 million and 3.5 million tons of crushed cane a year at plants in six locations throughout much of central and eastern Mexico. Continual investment in acquisitions and modernization has made Empresas Santos a leading player in Mexican sugar, with around 10 percent of national production, and it is a key supplier to producers of soft drinks, sweets, ice cream, and baked goods.
The group has expanded into other areas of activity, most notably real estate, where it has acquired land in Monterrey and other prime locations around Mexico. Urban residential developments include the Los Angeles Bosque Residencial and Hacienda El Mirador, while tourism-related developments in partnership with other companies include the Residencial Tres Vidas on the Pacific coast at Acapulco. This major high-end project is an ongoing development designed to include private homes, hotels, a club, and an international-grade eighteen-hole golf course.
