BIOGRAPHY
A chemical engineer by training (, B.Sc. and M.Sc., ColumbiaUniversity (1970,72) and Ph.D., the University of Michigan (1978). He is currently a professor of chemical engineering at KuwaitUniversity. Dr. Bishara is intimately knowledgeable about past technical research in Kuwait and the region by virtue of his involvement in Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR, 1981‑85) as Deputy Director General responsible for research; and in teaching and manpower development as Vice Rector for Academic Affairs (1985‑89) at KuwaitUniversity. He teaches chemical engineering at KuwaitUniversity.
Dr. Bishara served on the board of directors of many public and private organizations, dealing with education, industry, construction, services and others. Over the past 5 years, his activities have covered a wide variety of private sector areas: nuclear energy, communication, information technology and investment.Since 1989, Dr. Bishara has set up and managed a well-known consulting office in Kuwait (Arab Dar Consultants) that addresses local and regional problems and offers a wide variety of consulting services to government and private organizations.
Dr. Bishara serves as the Secretary General of Kuwait National Nuclear Energy Committee (KNNEC), high level government agency responsible for studying nuclear energy with the aim of introducing it to Kuwait’s total energy mix. He also serves on Kuwait’s Planning Council.
Currently,Dr. Bishara serves as Deputy Director General of Kuwait Foundation for Advancement of Sciences (KFAS).
He specializes in the application of science, technology and education for development; and has written and lectured widely on subjects related to this matters. He has planned and managed many research projects and large inter-disciplinary research programs on behalf of governmental and private organizations.
Dr. Bishara is involved in various civic and professional societies in Kuwait. He regularly writes on various public issues in local and regional papers and magazines, and appears on TV shows and speaks in public meetings on various socio-political issues.
KFAS
Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) is a private, non-profit organization, established by an Amiri Decree issued on December 12, 1976.
KFAS is managed and administered by a Board of Directors (BOD), chaired by H.H. the Amir of the State of Kuwait. The Board is comprised of six members appointed by H.H for a period of three years. KFAS receives financial contributions by the Kuwaiti Shareholding Companies, amounting to 1% of the net annual profit. The BOD appoints a Director General who manages the scientific, administrative and financial activities of KFAS and monitors the implementation of the policies set by BOD.
