BIOGRAPHY
Mr. Téllez is a business and political leader who since 2009 has been chairman of the board and CEO of the Mexican Stock Exchange, known by its Spanish abbreviation BMV. Prior to his current position, Mr. Téllez served in a variety of senior posts in both the federal government and the private sector. He was Mexican secretary of communications and transportation from 2006 to 2009 under President Felipe Calderón, and before that secretary of energy from 1997 to 2000 under President Ernesto Zedillo, who he had served earlier as chief of staff. Mr. Téllez was also head economist at the Ministry of Treasury and undersecretary of planning at the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources during the 1988–1994 administration of President Carlos Salinas de Gortari.In the private sector Mr. Téllez was executive vice president and CEO of DESC, S.A., one of Mexico’s largest diversified holding companies, and managing director in Mexico of The Carlyle Group, an investment firm. He has served as a director of several leading companies in Mexico including Grupo México S.A. de C.V.; Global Industries Ltd.; FEMSA (Fomento Economico Mexicano S.A.B. de C.V.); the Federal Electricity Commission (La Comisión Federal de Electricidad); Grupo Azucarero México, S.A.B. de C.V.; Sempra Energy, and Grupo Embotelladoras Unidas, S.A.B. de C.V.. He has also served as a director of McLarty Associates and the Mexican Council of Foreign Affairs, besides being a member of the Trilateral Commission and a trustee of Bioversity International.Mr. Téllez holds an economics degree from the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México and a Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
MEXICAN STOCK EXCHANGE
Founded 1933 and located in downtown Mexico City, the Mexican Stock Exchange grew by 26.8% in U.S. Dollars in 2012, compared to an increase of 10.5% for the FTSE 100, 15.9% for the Nasdaq, and a drop of 2.5% for Brazil’s IBOVESPA. Market capitalization at the end of 2012 was roughly US$525 billion, making it the second biggest national exchange in Latin America after BOVESPA, with an average daily trading volume approaching US$16 billion. BMV went public in 2008.
